Deodorisation is a decisive step in the process of refining edible oil. Refining removes unwelcome accompanying substances to produce high-quality edible oils that can be used in a variety of ways. Edible oils are physically refined and deodorised in a vacuum. Generating and maintaining an ideal vacuum is pivotal to the high quality of the finished product.

An extensive order

Körting Hannover AG has now received an order to supply 10 ice condensation vacuum systems to a customer in South-East Asia. These systems will be used to modernise (revamping) existing plants and ensure edible oils are refined in an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient manner in future. The major order is worth several million euros and proves that plant operators are increasingly placing emphasis on energy-efficient technologies. In addition to top product quality, the customer also benefits from low levels of exhaust air and waste water as well as lower running costs. Because the systems strictly separate cooling water and condensate, any harmful impact on the environment is largely avoided.

Globally leading technology

Körting ice condensation vacuum systems can also generate a process vacuum of under 1 mbar. One advantage compared with traditional vacuum systems is that ice condensation vacuum systems enable the process steam to condense at process pressure. They achieve this through the desublimation of the process steam, in other words the direct transition from the steam to the solid phase. The process steam then settles as a layer of ice on the condenser pipes. The condenser must be defrosted regularly to remove this layer of ice. With two ice condensers of the same design, the system can continue to produce without any downtime because there’s always one condenser available for desublimation.

Stable vacuum during operation

The ice condensation vacuum system has been designed in such a way that the stability of the vacuum system isn’t impaired when the ice condensers are changed either. It’s one of the world’s most modern and effective vacuum systems for refining edible oil. When the costs of various vacuum systems for deodorising edible oil are compared, the savings potential for plant operators is easy to identify.
