Körting hot gas quenches/hot gas scrubbersEfficient hot gas cooling for demanding and complex industrial processes

Quench head and hot gas inlet in a combined Körting air-water hot gas quench

To comply with emission limits, protect downstream components and ensure flawless production, high temperature, industrial process gases need quick and reliable cooling. Körting’s hot gas quench is a sophisticated solution with a strong track record.

It cools hot gas effectively and offers extra functions such as conveying, absorption, dedusting and droplet separation geared to your requirements.

What are hot gas quenches?

Quenching is all about cooling hot gases exceptionally quickly – typically at inlet temperatures of 200 up to 1,200°C – when they come into contact with water or other fluids. Fluid distribution, control and flow of the gas, nozzle design and precise coordination of water atomisation are key factors in the process. Körting draws on decades of experience and customised systems for highest thermal loads.

Benefits of Körting hot gas quenches at a glance

  • Efficient cooling of hot process gases up to 1,200°C
  • Robust temperature protection of downstream components
  • Multifunctional because combinable with dedusting and absorption
  • No extra blowers required: no pressure loss on the gas side and with integrated gas conveying
  • Very flexible: comes with and without cooling
  • Load independent performance even when temperatures and gas flows change
  • A range of materials: stainless steel, heat-resistant steels, Hastelloy/alloys, carbon steel and many more
  • Optional corrosion protection with coatings, rubber linings or lead glazing
  • A redundant water supply and emergency cooling functions can be integrated
  • Multi-stage systems possible
  • Customisation to your requirements and media

The Körting hot gas quench comes in nominal diameters of up to DN 2000. It’s suitable for gases with inlet temperatures of between 200°C and 1,200°C, in some cases, even up to 1,400°C. The cooled gases leave the quench fully saturated with water vapour (wet-bulb temperature), making them ideal for preventing thermal damage or product deposits. Designed to optimise flow, the quench cools and conveys the gas flow efficiently without causing pressure loss. Extra measures can be taken to cool the gas flow down even further.

More than just cooling – combined functions mean outstanding reliability

Körting hot gas quenches frequently do more than just cool. Alongside conveying gas, one single quench can also dedust, condition and chemically scrub gas. Modules such as downstream jet scrubbers, Venturi scrubbers, columns, or swirl droplet separators can also be integrated into Körting quench systems.

Applications and options

Typical usage: A 150°C hot gas flow (example 1, see diagram) or one at 1,000°C (example 2, see diagram) and a mass flow of 1,100 kg/h (water content 0.1 kg per kg of dry air) is cooled down with quench water of 30°C to a gas outlet temperature of just 40°C. This is a prime example of process control at maximum efficiency.

Customised options:

  • With or without cooling jacket
  • Insulated or not insulated
  • Inner walls can be rinsed/double-walled/brick lined
  • Special materials and combinations of these (tailored corrosion protection)
  • Independent water circuits can be added (for redundancy)
  • Process water, air or inert gas can be used
  • An extra emergency cooling function and just-in-time availability also possible
